LSA in China - Learning Support Assistant Job Description

What is a Learning Support Assistant (LSA)?

A Learning Support Assistant (LSA), also known as an Internal Assistant (IA), is a professional who works in an educational setting to provide support and assistance to students and teachers.

The primary role of an LSA is to help meet the diverse learning needs of students, including those with special educational needs or disabilities. The specific duties of an LSA can vary depending on the educational level and the individual needs of the students, but generally, they may involve:

  1. Supporting Individual Students: LSAs often work closely with individual students who require additional assistance. This could involve helping them understand class materials, providing extra practice, or adapting learning activities to suit their needs.

  2. Assisting with Classroom Management: LSAs may help maintain a positive and productive learning environment by assisting with classroom management, behavior management, and helping to keep students engaged in the learning process.

  3. Collaborating with Teachers: LSAs work closely with teachers to implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and to ensure that the overall curriculum is accessible to all students. They may also collaborate on lesson planning and the development of teaching materials.

  4. Providing Specialized Support: For students with special educational needs, such as those with learning disabilities, autism, or physical disabilities, LSAs may provide specialized support tailored to the individual needs of each student.

  5. Facilitating Inclusion: LSAs play a crucial role in promoting inclusive education by ensuring that all students, regardless of their abilities or challenges, have equal access to learning opportunities. This may involve modifying activities, materials, or assessments to accommodate diverse learning styles.

  6. Monitoring and Reporting Progress: LSAs often observe and assess the progress of students they work with, providing feedback to teachers and parents. They may also assist in maintaining records and documentation related to student performance and development.

  7. Promoting Independence: LSAs aim to empower students to become more independent learners. They may work on developing essential life skills and fostering self-confidence in students.

Learning Support Assistants play a vital role in creating an inclusive and supportive educational environment, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
